This past weekend, as I looked through my back window, I realized the trees overlapped to form the letter “W”, so this is how I chose my subject for this letter. I went back to using the Tombow Drawing Pencils because I love how they work with this paper.

This day was sunny and beautiful and I found myself becoming entranced with the patterns on the bark of the trees. I hadn’t realized how geometric the bark was until I really took a look at it. The tree of the left had patterns that reminded me of a flowing river and I was struck with how patterns seem to repeat themselves in nature.

The book format is a medium that provides some interesting options because of its design. I couldn’t resist creating another pop-up using the symmetrical letter “V” that would capitalize on this situation.

The pop-up took four pages instead of two. The two outer pages were used as anchors to glue the backsides of the inner pages. This is what pulls the pop-up upright when you open the outer pages. I folded the outer corners of the two inside pages into the middle, overlapped them and glued them together to create the “V”.  I added the illustration before I glued the pages because it was easier to draw on the unglued paper.

The rough textured background was created by pressing a stamp pad into the paper. On the outer pages, I had to use an acrylic fixative before I pressed the pad so the ink would not bleed through the back of the pages.

V-shaped flowers were glued on the backside of the big “V” so they would move forward when the page popped open. On the larger flowers I had to use wire to keep the flower heads from falling over.

A Pop-Up was Created for the Letter V which Required the Use of Four Pages to Make it Work.
